(1816?–98), disciple and acquaintance of Thoreau, from whose sister he inherited the unpublished notebooks which he edited, often inaccurately, as Early Spring in Massachusetts (1881), Summer (1884), Winter (1888), Autumn (1892), whose titles for a time gave Thoreau a specious reputation as a naturalist.
