Pseudonym for the husband-and-wife writing team of Nigel Gosling and the former dancer Maude Lloyd. Gosling (b London, 29 Jan. 1909; d London, 21 May 1982), studied part-time at the Ballet Rambert School (1935–9) and started writing dance criticism in 1951 for Ballet magazine. ‘Alexander Bland’ was ballet critic of the Observer from 1955 to 1982, wrote The Dancer's World with M. Peto (1963), A History of Ballet and Dance (1976), and The Royal Ballet—The First 50 Years (1981), and edited Nureyev, An Autobiography (1962).
