(1742–90) Revolutionary army officer, born in Prince George County, Virginia. Bland took part (with James Monroe and Benjamin Harrison) in a 26–man raid of the Virginia governor's mansion, distributing confiscated weapons to Whig partisans (1775). As a colonel of the 1st Regiment of Continental Light Dragoons in the Continental army under Washington, he fought in the battle of Brandywine (1777).
