(1898–1943), singer and actor. Born in Waco, Texas, the African-American performer appeared on Broadway as the original Abraham McCranie, the rebellious half-breed, in In Abraham's Bosom (1926) and also won praise for his performance in the musical Deep River (1926). However, he is best remembered as the first Joe in Show Boat (1927), in which he introduced “Ol' Man River.”
