Educated at St John's College, Oxford, he joined the Bodleian Library in 1808, held various university offices, including Keeper of the Archives, and was principal of St Mary Hall (1848–57). His editions included John Earle's Microcosmography (1811) and Anthony Wood's Athenae Oxonienses (1813–20). His personal library, strong in 16th- and 17th-century poetry and MSS fragments, was dispersed through Sotheby's (1858).
