A technique devised by Alexander Cozens, whereby an accidental mark or ‘blot’ on the paper is used as the starting point for an imaginative landscape composition. A similar suggestion had been made much earlier by Leonardo da Vinci and somewhat similar techniques were later used by the Surrealists for stimulating unconscious imagery (see automatism).
