Premiered 5 Jun. 1953 by Sadler's Wells Theatre Ballet at Sadler's Wells Theatre, London, with Fifield, Poole, and Trecu. The libretto, based on Lorca's 1933 play, is a violent portrait of jealousy and revenge in a Spanish village, as two men die for the love of the same woman. Other versions include Gades (mus. Emilio de Diego, 1974, filmed by Carlos Saura, 1981).
