Piano‐making firm, founded Leipzig 1853 by Julius Blüthner (b Falkenhain, 1824; d Leipzig, 1910). In 1873 patented aliquot scaling (addition of fourth, sympathetic, string to each trichord group in treble) to strengthen upper register. Factory destroyed during Second World War, re‐opened 1974.
