Austrian dancer, teacher, choreographer and company director. She taught mime and dance at the Vienna State Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, making her stage debut in 1919 and in 1923 starting her own company, which toured Europe and visited America. She was considered a leading exponent of Ausdruckstanz. In 1939, after having been forced out of Austria by the Nazi annexation, she emigrated to Australia and re-formed her company as the Boldenwieser Ballet. This toured extensively in Australia, as well as travelling to South Africa and India in the 1950s. Through her teaching and choreography, Bodenwieser exerted a major influence on the development of modern dance in Australia.
