Quick Reference

(Skt.). The rules of moral conduct or discipline prescribed for Bodhisattvas. Although there is no single universally accepted code of conduct for Bodhisattvas, the various precepts stipulated througout the Mahāyāna sūtras are grouped together and explicated in certain key texts, such as the chapter on morality (śīla-paṭala) of the Bodhisattvabhūmi Śāstra. The rules and procedures described there are often adopted by Buddhists as part of the formal ceremony when they accept the Bodhisattva-vow (pranidhāna).
