(1921– )

Dutch/Belgian painter, born in Delft. He moved to Belgium in 1960, acquiring Belgian nationality in 1969. He is one of the chief exponents of Matterism, making paintings so thick as almost to constitute reliefs. He works with a complex technique involving large quantities of pigment purchased in powder form, combined in two separate mixtures with water and oil, then mixed with plaster or cement to make it malleable. The result is colour of remarkable clarity and splendour.
