A German Sanskrit scholar, lexicographer, and translator who, with Rudolf Roth and Albrecht Weber, was responsible for the compilation of the seven-volume St. Petersburg Sanskrit-German Dictionary (St. Petersburg Wörterbuch (also known as the St Petersburg Lexicon), 1852–1875), according to many the greatest achievement of 19th-century European Indology, and the basis for Sir Monier Monier-Williams' Sanskrit-English Dictionary.
