Industrial work with boilers carries several kinds of occupational hazards. The manufacture of boilers traditionally has been an extremely noisy procedure, and many boiler makers have occupationally induced deafness. Maintenance involves working with insulating material, including until recently asbestos, so asbestosis and mesothelioma have been risks. Cleaning out scale (precipitated salts) from inside boilers carries a risk of pneumoconiosis.
