Bolton was born at Brookhouse near Blackburn, Lancashire in May 1572. He died at Broughton, Northamptonshire, on 17 December 1631. After education at Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School in Blackburn, he went to Oxford in 1592, attending first Lincoln College and then Brasenose. He received his BA in 1596 and MA in 1602, becoming a fellow of Brasenose in the latter year. He lectured at the university on logic and moral philosophy for several years.
