Quick Reference

(1898–1974), was one of the most prolific and certainly the most financially successful of New Zealand authors of his generation. He grew up on coastal farming country at Opotiki, and a good deal of his own Methodist background is present in his first novel, Solemn Bay (1927), with the family insistence that ‘originality, individuality and personality are things to be avoided’. Of more biographical interest, perhaps, is the novel's unconvincing heterosexual romance as homosexuality almost wins the day.
