India's leading stock exchange, listing nearly 5000 companies. British influence brought share trading to India, where trading began in the 1830s on an informal basis in Mumbai, the commercial gateway from the West; exchanges now exist in many other cities. The Indian government has created a Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) to regulate the market. The main index is the BSE Sensex of 30 representative stocks. The National Stock Exchange of India is also in Mumbai.
