(b Barcelona, 1972)
Spanish dancer, choreographer and director. He began his training in Spain, aged 15, then moved to the UK in 1991, training at the London Studio Centre and joining Rambert Dance Company in 1992. He began choreographing in 1999, creating nine works for Rambert including 21 and Curious Conscience (2005) and was made artistic associate of that company in 2003. In 2006 he formed his own company for which he has since created several works including Voices (mus. Berio, 2006), Square Map of 4 (mus. Marius de Vries, 2008) and The Land of Yes and the Land of No (mus. Ezio Bosso, 2009). His style combines an aggressively physical dynamic with inventively expressive detail, focusing on human relationships and extreme states of emotion. In 2008 he was appointed artistic director of Sydney Dance Company, running it in tandem with his own London-based company. Bonachela has also created works for companies including CandoCo and George Piper Dances and has choreographed for film, video, and stage including several collaborations with singer Kylie Minogue (e.g. the Showgirl Tour, 2005).
