Soviet cosmonaut. The youngest member of the original group of cosmonauts, Bondarenko died from shock eight hours after accidentally starting a fire in a pressurized pure oxygen chamber by tossing cotton wool soaked in alcohol onto an electric hotplate, during a ten-day series of tests in the chamber. He was selected as a cosmonaut in 1960.
