Originally slang for the concealment of contraband goods inside a boot, the term has come to be applied to the illicit distribution of regulated or copyrighted material. Bootlegging remains a practice in many areas where there is strong regulatory activity or prohibition is in force. Most recently the bootlegging or ‘piracy’ of CDs and DVDs or music recording and films has become an illicit trade on a global scale. The Internet has created many more options for bootlegging and has caused its proliferation.
