Thomas Bopp was born in Denver, Colorado. His interest in astronomy led him to join a local informal group of amateur astronomers in the Phoenix area. Here, on July 22nd 1995, he was the first to see a new comet, now known as Hale-Bopp. The comet was independently found by the astronomer Alan Hale.
