Borthwick Institute for Archives, York

A department of the University of York, specializing in the ecclesiastical history of the province of York, with search facilities (by appointment only) for members of the public. Formerly known as the Borthwick Institute of Historical Research, it was renamed upon its move from the medieval St Anthony's Hall to a new site next to the university library. It houses the diocesan archives, including wills and inventories, parish registers, bishops’ transcripts, tithe awards, and ecclesiastical court records. The records of most of the peculiar jurisdictions within the province of York are also kept there. The parish registers and some other records are on microfilm.
