Is a widespread colloquial term for a manager or owner of an employment organization. The phrases ‘the boss’ or ‘my boss’, are often used to refer to one's immediate line manager, the person to whom one reports. The term can have a connotation of difference, resentment, and also fear. The boss can be someone who exercises a great deal of control over one's life and consequently is resented or feared, particularly when the boss is remote or authoritarian. A ‘good boss’, in contrast, is someone who is considerate to those who are managed, and who may adopt a paternalist interpretation of the management role. [See us-and-them.]
