Botfield was educated at Christ Church, Oxford, and became a successful industrialist. He produced a number of editions and catalogues connected with medieval Britain, and collected Caxtons and other incunabula. On his death, his books were bequeathed to the Thynne family, at Longleat. These were dispersed in book auctions at Sotheby's (1979) and Christie's (1994 and 2002).
