(1719–65) British army officer, born in Rolle, Switzerland. In the French and Indian War, (1754–63) he was second in command under Gen. John Forbes in successful attack on Fort Duquesne (Pittsburgh) in 1758. In Pontiac's Rebellion, he defeated the Indian war party at Bushy Run near Pittsburgh (August 1763). Without shooting, he negotiated the Indians' surrender and an end to the war (1764).
