Tunisian nationalist and statesman, President (1957–87). Having negotiated the settlement that led to his country's autonomy, he was its first Prime Minister after independence in 1956 and was chosen as its first President when the country became a republic in 1957. A moderate socialist, he embarked on a reform programme intended to improve Tunisia's economy and to establish democratic government. He was deposed following continuing political unrest.
