Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

The deliberate exclusion from a formal communication model of any direct reference to an object, idea, or event in the world. Saussure's model of the sign brackets the referent—consequently critics have seen it as an idealist model. His focus was on the meaning generated from relations within the (language) system: see also relational model.
