Quick Reference

Belgian architect and writer. Influenced by Russian Constructivism and Le Corbusier (with whom he worked 1936–7), he was a member of CIAM from 1939. He designed the Kiel district (1949–58—which has not improved with age), and the huge tower of the Administrative Centre, Schoenmarkt (1951), both in Antwerp; the Sint Martensdal district of Leuven; low-cost housing at Boom (1965–70); the Gemeentebibliotheek van Schoten (1968–74); and the administrative building for the Free University of Brussels (1971–8). His career was marked by the extreme Utopian stances he adopted.
