1 (Brahmāṇī) The name of Brahmā's śakti. According to some Purāṇic accounts, she was also the god's daughter, and gave birth to the first Manu as a result of their incestuous union. She is one of the seven or eight mātṛkas.
2 The name of an important early script, well-adapted to the phonetics of the Indo-Āryan languages, and one of two used for Aśoka's edicts. It formed the basis for numerous later scripts, including devanāgarī. Brāhmī's origins are unclear and remain a matter of debate.
