Eng. player of French horn. Prin. hn. from 1913 of Beecham's touring opera orch. and later at CG. Prin. hn. BBC SO 1930–45. Prof. RAM 1923–55. His brother Alfred (b London, 1885; d Los Angeles, 1966), regarded by some as an even finer player, was for many years first hn. of Henry Wood's Queen's Hall Orch., until in 1923 he went to USA becoming prin. hn. of Los Angeles PO and manager of Hollywood Bowl concerts. From 1943 to retirement played in MGM and 20th Century Fox film studio orchs.
