Cambridge philosopher of science and probability. His major work Scientific Explanation (1955) takes a forthright empiricist line, derived from Hume and Ramsey, in the philosophy of probability and causation. His inaugural lecture ‘The theory of games as a tool for the moral philosopher’ was an early example of this application of game theory.
