(subclass Actinopterygii, order Perciformes)
A family of deep-bodied, moderate to large oceanic fish. Oval in outline, the body has long dorsal and anal fins, a forked tail, and large, wing-like pectoral fins. Brama brama (Ray's bream or Atlantic pomfret), reaching a length of up to 70 cm, lives in depths of 100 m or below. There are about 18 species, found in all but polar seas.
