The certificate or diploma which used to be given by Trinity House to a pilot qualified to navigate a ship in British waters. A full branch from Trinity House qualified a pilot to navigate without any restrictions in British waters, which included the whole of the English Channel and all other waters around the British Isles even when they lay outside territorial waters. A limited branch gave him a qualification to act as a pilot only in waters specifically named in the branch. Nowadays, a branch is the certificate awarded to Younger Brethren of Trinity House on election.
