founder of the SPCK and SPG. When an appeal for help with the ecclesiastical organization of Maryland, USA, reached H. Compton, Bp. of London, the Bishop appointed Bray his commissary. In view of the poverty of the clergy, Bray worked out a scheme for the provision of free libraries in the colony; he promoted a similar project at home. Another of his schemes took shape in the foundation of the SPCK (1698).With others, he founded the SPG as a separate society for foreign missions (1701). Feast day in parts of the Anglican Communion, 15 Feb.
