Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

In the Eucharistic rite most of the E. Churches use leavened bread, whereas Catholics in the W. use unleavened; the divergence became a cause of dissension. In the Anglican Communion the use of either is now permitted, either implicitly or explicitly. Leavened bread is generally used by Nonconformists.
