(1745–90) Revolutionary War officer, jurist, and framer and defender of the U.S. Constitution, born near Maidenshead (now Lawrenceville), New Jersey. In the Revolutionary War, as a lieutenant colonel of the 1st New Jersey Regiment, he served at the battles of Brandywine (1777), Germantown (1777), and Monmouth (1778). Brearly resigned from the army when he was elected chief justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court in 1779.
