US politician and general. He served as a Democrat member of the House of Representatives (1851–55), before being elected as Buchanan's Vice-President in 1856. When the Democratic Party split in 1860, he ran for President against Abraham Lincoln as the candidate of the Southern Democrats. From November 1861, he saw extensive service as a major-general in the army of the Confederacy Party before becoming Secretary of State for War under Jefferson Davis in 1865.
