A psychological mechanism that stabilizes relative shifts in the brightness of things. Light changes continuously and transforms appearances, but we rarely notice this. A white tee-shirt looks white whether it is brightly or dimly lit even though the wavelength of light reaching the retina is different. See also perceptual constancies.
