US dance musical with choreography by Savion Glover, music by Daryl Waters, Zane Mark, and Ann Duquesnay, book and lyrics by Reg E. Gaines. Conceived and directed by Savion Glover and George C. Wolfe. Premiered 15 Nov. 1995 at the Joseph Papp Public Theater in New York. It transferred to Broadway's Ambassador Theater in April 1996. The musical traces the history of black America through its dance forms, from the days of slave ships to the modern inner city, and it encompasses tap and hip-hop. It earned Glover the 1996 Tony Award for Choreography.
