Quick Reference

The 1990s phenomenon of ‘Britart’ (an abbreviation essentially synonymous with YBA) grew out of an interest in new British art stimulated by the Turner Prize, inaugurated in 1984, held annually at the Tate Gallery, London. Further influential factors were the patronage of the collector Charles Saatchi and the exhibition Freeze, curated by Damien Hirst in an empty London warehouse in 1988.
