The smaller part of the Caribbean Virgin Island group, they came under British sovereignty in the seventeenth century, and were part of the British colony of the Leeward Islands until 1956. Since then they have been administered as a United Kingdom Dependent Territory, with effective local self‐government guaranteed by the 1977 constitution. Banking and tourism have become the major economic activities, accounting for around three‐quarters of the Gross Domestic Product in 2001.
