More properly Britomartis, a Cretan goddess who is the patroness of hunters, fishermen, and sailors. She was a nymph, the daughter of Zeus and Carme. When pursued by Minos, King of Crete, who wanted to ravish her, she sprang into the sea but was saved from drowning by the nets of some fishermen.
