Quick Reference

The function of the Council is to monitor and improve standards in independent institutions of further and higher education which offer British‐accredited awards, including General Certificate of Education Advanced Level, degrees, and postgraduate qualifications. Such institutions include independent universities overseas; independent professional colleges in the United Kingdom which undertake specialist vocational training; and independent colleges—so‐called crammers—which specialize in preparing candidates for public examinations. To maintain their accredited status, colleges undergo an inspection every five years, in addition to a visit by BAC inspectors between formal inspections. The Council currently accredits more than 200 colleges in the UK, and almost 30 overseas in countries such as the United States, Pakistan, and Switzerland. The Council's membership includes nominees from bodies such as the Association of Colleges and the British Council.
