Any of the 47 numbered areas of the cerebral cortex, such as Area 17, the primary visual cortex, in the most widely used reference map of the brain (see illustration). It was constructed as a cytoarchitectonic map based on differences in cell layers and structures, but the areas turned out in general to correspond to different psychological functions. BA abbrev. [Named after the German neurologist Korbinian Brodmann (1868–1918), who developed an early version of it in 1903 and published it in an influential book in 1909]
