A French botanist, who became a professor at the Muséum d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris, in 1831 and retained the position until his death. He was particularly noted for his work on the classification and distribution of fossil plants and their relationships with existing forms. In 1854 he founded the Société Botanique de France and was its first president.
