Amer. musicologist. While a student at Harvard cond. and perf. both early and 20th cent. mus. in Boston and Cambridge. Instructor at Wellesley Coll. 1958–60. On staff Chicago Univ. 1960–72. Prof. of mus., King's Coll., London Univ., 1972–4. Returned to Chicago 1974. Founded Collegium Musicum at Chicago with which he perf. and recorded medieval and Renaissance works. Authority on Burgundian composers and 15th and 16th cent. chansons, period instr., and performing practice.
