browser war

Quick Reference

A term used to describe the marketing war between the Microsoft Corporation and the Netscape Corporation over their respective browsers Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator which took place in the mid 1990s. Many ordinary users of browsers were drawn into this war, mainly in newsgroups where the discussion of the relative merits of the browsers often spilled into discussion about the ethics of the companies involved, a prime example of a religious war.
