(1909–2002), a native of north-east Scotland, was educated at the University of Aberdeen. He taught for some years before joining the BBC. Since his retirement he has held a number of visiting posts in American and Australian universities. Sea Talk (Glasgow, 1944), was followed by Selected Poems (Edinburgh, 1947). Perspectives: Poems 1970 –1986 (Aberdeen, 1987) continues from Collected Poems (Edinburgh, 1971).
