In this test, the speed and gradient of the treadmill are increased every third minute, starting at 1.7 miles h−1 at a 10% gradient and rising at stage seven to 6 miles h−1 at a 22% gradient (the Bruce protocol). Generally, heart rate is monitored with an ECG and the test continues until exhaustion or a predetermined heart rate is reached.
