Saxon Court Architect, and designer of the Festspielhaus (Festival Theatre), Bayreuth, Bavaria, for Richard Wagner (1813–83), much influenced by the work of Semper and Wagner himself. There is a huge stage and the auditorium seating is arranged like a segment of a circle, with the orchestra placed out of sight and partially under the stage. It was an important innovation in theatre design.
