Quick Reference

[Ir., (farm-) house, abode; region, district; cultivated land].

Although this term may be translated as ‘(farm-) house, abode’, etc., in much of Irish usage, it acquired associations with the spirit and fairy world as it was used in myths and folk-tales. In narratives collected from oral tradition it often denotes the interior of a fairy mound, especially a place where a number of fairies live together, not just the home for a family.
